Nessebar’s history unfolds like a journey through the civilizations of the Black Sea. Founded over 3,000 years ago by the Thracians, the town was originally known as Mesembria and later developed into a prosperous Greek colony. Thanks to its strategic position on a rocky peninsula, it became an important center for trade, culture, and maritime power in the ancient world. Remnants of massive city walls, temples, and an ancient agora still hint at its classical past.

Under Roman and later Byzantine rule, Nessebar flourished as a religious and cultural hub. During the Middle Ages, the town gained fame for its extraordinary number of churches, earning it the nickname “the City of Forty Churches.” Although fewer survive today, landmarks such as the Church of Christ Pantocrator and the Church of St. John Aliturgetos showcase remarkable medieval architecture and decorative brickwork.

Ottoman rule brought changes but did not erase Nessebar’s identity. Traditional wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, built atop stone foundations, reflect the Bulgarian National Revival period and give the Old Town its distinctive charm. Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets today, visitors experience a living museum where ancient ruins, medieval churches, and historic homes coexist, making Nessebar one of the most atmospheric and historically rich destinations in southeastern Europe.
